I first saw the Northern Lights the very first night we arrived in Iceland, on the bus from the airport to our hotel. A big horizontal patch of the sky was green...and the green seem to move....later moving to become a vertical line.... The street lights are a big of a hinderance, making it rather difficult to see the green lights clearly.
Our actual Northern Lights tour was suppose to be on the 2nd night in Iceland, however, the tour was canceled because cloudy weather will not enable us to see the lights...Bummer...!
On the 3rd night, I was so afraid that the tour will be cancelled yet again, because we have had a whole day of rain....but YAY! we receive news that the tour will be on and we will be picked up at 9.30pm at night. :)
The coach drove half an hour out of the city, and stop by the highway side in the middle of nowhere...We were asked to get down and wait / watch for the Northern Lights...I remembered thinking...wow...this is rather dangerous....in the pitch black night, a whole group of people just standing on the side of the highway.....on-coming vehicles might not be able to see us! But we wait...it a pretty chilly night with strong icy cold wind! We could see town lights far out in the horizon and we could see very clearly, sky that was filled with many, many bright beautiful stars. Kinda reminded me of my trip to the desert of Central Australia, and the Ayers Rock...where the stars seemed much more and bigger from anywhere else.
Finally, after waiting and shivering for a few hours in the icy cold, there were some aurora activities at about 1.30am in the morning.....and we saw some of the the Northern Lights. :) Pictures taken with a tripod and sophisticated camera by our tour guide, :)
