The Golden Circle is a popular tourist route in South Iceland, covering about 300 km looping from Reykjavík into central Iceland and back. We passed a variety of countryside, most which is covered in ice - hence the name, Iceland.
The three primary stops on the route are the national park Þingvellir, the waterfall Gullfoss (meaning "golden falls"), and the geothermally active valley of Haukadalur, which contains the geysers Geysir and Strokkur. While at he geothermally active valley, we waited and saw the geyser Strokkur spray water a few times...its exciting, waiting and anticipating when the water is going to sprout out of the hole. There is a little cafe by the geysers (where the volcanic museum is), which serves the best ever lamb stew soup in Iceland...YUM!!
We also stopped at
Skálholt church, to appreciate the iceland countryside. This is where the first bishop of Iceland stayed...
The national park is really beautiful and this is also where the joints of the atlantic plates are....the plates apparently move apart 2 inches a year...which means the Iceland gets bigger by 2 inches every year. This is where the first parliment of Iceland was held, and representatives from all over the country gather to make their rules here - Don't know why this place is chosen, for the beauty, or because of its location its in the middle of Iceland?
The waterfalls...wow...I read that it has more fury and power then Niagara Falls! Someone told us that when she went to Iceland in winter, this waterfall is frozen - yes, a frozen waterfall - to the drop!
The very interesting part of our tour is the various types of jeeps / transportation we come across on our Golden Circle tour....
