Walking along the streets of Venice itself is like an adventure in a maze, We spent a whole day just walking the tiny streets and shadowy backlanes of Venice, immersing ourselves in the beauty of the city and getting lost. Every street look just like the next, and yet there is something unique about each street ... hehe, but maybe that's the beauty of it. Many thoughts crossed our minds when we were walking .....How do fire engines reach a fire if there's ever a fire in one of the buildings in Venice? How would one every find the directions to their hotel if its not one of the hotels along the grand canal? Is there a numbering system for each street to the addresses in Venice (seems like the number is just increasing wherever we turn - perhaps they just use numbers and not street names)? How is this city called the City of Masks? Is it the many masquarades that they hold here?
St Marks Square, or San Marco square, which is only a short walk along the grand canal from our hotel is the highlight of this city. The Palace Dacau and Basilica di San Marco is located in this square. Entering the Basilica, it is just as grand and wow as any other famous church in Europe, however, this building is the most sacred site in Venice as it is where the tomb of the Apostle Mark is.
